Matchday Musings: Real Madrid 6-2 Malaga

Read an in-depth analysis of the La Liga game between Real Madrid and Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu on May 8, 2013.

Pepe Problems

After Real Madrid’s last La Liga game against Real Valladolid, Pepe criticized Mourinho’s comment that Diego Lopez should have been in Real Madrid a year ago. The Portuguese defender found the comments disrespectful and Mourinho’s decision to that was to leave him out of the squad for tonight. Also, he commented that Pepe’s problem was Raphael Varane. Things do not look good between the defender and the manager at the moment and only time will tell where this story will take us.

Tempers Rise

Tempers Rise

Bizarre First Half

The first half ended 4-2 to Real Madrid and it was slightly weird. Putting aside the fact that there were 6 goals scored, Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty, Malaga got a red card, and Los Merengues scored a goal from an indirect free kick inside the box. All of this sounds slightly normal, but there was a weird vibe while watching the game, not something that one can really point out well.

Caballero Injury

Caballero, Malaga’s goalkeeper, had to be taken off towards the end of the first half to be replaced by Carlos Kameni since he sprained his foot after Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty was saved by his foot. No word out yet as to how serious the injury it, but it does not seem too serious since he was able to walk off the pitch with a minor limp.

Karim Benzema Off-Day

Karim Benzema was chosen to start the match ahead of Gonzalo Higuain but he really was not able to get into the game. He scored a goal at the end of the first half but it was a very simple finish. Other than that, he found trouble controlling the ball and getting his shots and passes through. Not one of his best days, and needs to find some way to improve as soon as possible with only a few weeks left in La Liga and the Copa del Rey final against Atletico Madrid to worry about.

The First Half Takes Its Toll On Malaga

The first half didn’t go as planned and it really showed on Manuel Pellegrini’s face. They conceded 4 goals, received a red card, and gave Real Madrid a free kick from inside the box after Caballero held a back pass. Things weren’t going well and, in the second half, they kept trying but they just could not get their minds in the game as Los Blancos found ways to keep the energy alive and score another goal from Luka Modric.
